WHAT IS SCRATCH?

Scratch is a computer programming environment designed for coders of all ages, allowing kids to create interactive stories, games, and animations. Public libraries can use Scratch in their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) programming e orts to introduce programming concepts and promote creative problem-solving skills.

Scratch uses drag-and-drop coding blocks, making it accessible to learners who have no prior coding experience. It provides a visual environment in which children can learn coding concepts while creating interactive stories, games, and animations. These digital projects can be shared online or displayed in the library, fostering a sense of community and creative collaboration among library patrons.

Scratch is also an excellent tool for teaching critical thinking, problem-solving, and design skills, as children learn how to plan, iterate, and troubleshoot their projects. By introducing Scratch into public library STEAM programming, librarians can engage young learners in fun and interactive activities that promote computational thinking and creative expression.
