In their article "Real-Time Computerized Annotation of Pictures," authors Jia Li (Associate Professor, Department of Statistics) and James Wang (Associate Professor,College of Information Sciences and Technology), say their ALIPR system (Automatic Linguistic Indexing of Pictures-Real Time) analyzes the pixel content of images and compares that against a stored knowledge base of the pixel content of tens of thousands of image examples.
